Tomatoes

Right now I am happy to be growing my own tomatoes, even though I am only getting 1 or 2 a day. The Center for Disease Control has found Salmonella in some varieties of raw tomatoes in as many as 11 states. When last year's outbreak occurred I just didn't eat any leafy greens. But this time around I am so happy to have my own supply!

Above is a picture of my overgrown cherry tomatoes. I like to grow cherry tomatoes so I can just rinse and pop them in my mouth. When we bought this variety, the "Husky Cherry", I didn't realize they were a HUGE cherry tomato. I would say their diameter is about 1.5 inches. They are good to eat but a little messier because I have to bite them like fruit. And you know, I love the smell of the tomato leaves on my hands after I pick the fruit.

Allison - there's a great website that I frequent - it's
http://www.tomatocasual.com/ and it has lots of great info about growing, cooking and generally loving tomatoes. It's worth a look.

My tomatoes plants are still small - well over a month away from producing any fruit. I got them in a little late.

At the farmer's market they have local hot house tomatoes, but we won't have any outdoor tomatoes for at least a couple of weeks.

I used to not like tomatoes. What was wrong with me?

Robin- Thanks for the great link! I not only love the Tomato Casual site but their sister site also, Urban Garden Casual. They are both in my Google Reader.

I've never been good at growing things. No green thumb here. My grandpa is soooo goo at growing tomatoes. I'm not sure if he can grow anything else but when I want a tomato sandwich, he's the one I see. They're amazing. I think he might spray some bad stuff on them though to keep the bugs away. I need to go talk to him about that. Hmmmm?

Oh, it is my husband growing the veggies, not me. I just water them. I grow the easy stuff like flowers and herbs (well, I am trying this summer). From what I have seen so far the flowers I grow don't die. Ha Ha.
What goes on a tomato sandwich? That's sounds good!
